Laser Eye Surgery: An Alternative To Glasses & Contacts

It may be hard to believe, but laser eye surgery has been a viable option for correcting refractive errors since the 1980s. In fact, Canada first approved the excimer laser for use in PRK surgery in 1991. Since then, there have been significant advancements in laser eye surgery, and it remains a popular choice for vision correction.

Wondering if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery? At Dr. Zargar Eyecare, we will help you find out. Book an appointment today.

Understanding Laser Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a type of refractive surgery that involves reshaping the surface of the cornea, correcting the way light refracts into your eye. When the cornea is reshaped, light is able to fall directly on the retina, which, in turn, provides clear vision.

Because it is relatively painless and has a quick recovery time, laser eye surgery is a popular procedure for people who want freedom from glasses and contact lenses.

Initial Consultation

During our initial consultation, we will conduct several tests to determine your current prescription, corneal thickness, and pupil size. We will then talk about the different kinds of laser surgeries available, their benefits, and possible risks. We will also address any questions or concerns you may have.

At this time, we may determine that you need additional preparation before surgery. If you suffer from dry eyes, we can get you started on dry eye therapy to ensure you are producing high-quality tears—a key component in the functionality of your eyes before and after laser eye surgery.

Common types of laser surgery we will discuss and recommend include:

The first type of laser surgery ever conducted, PRK involves removing the outermost layer of the corneal surface, then reshaping the cornea to change how light refracts in your eye, correcting your prescription. The outermost corneal layer then grows back over the next few days.

PRK can be a good option for some patients whose corneas are too thin for LASIK.

The most popular form of laser eye surgery, LASIK, involves making a flap in the cornea’s outermost layer, then using a laser to reshape the cornea to its desired correction, and finally, replacing the flap. Because the outermost layer is preserved and replaced, LASIK generally has a quicker recovery time.

For patients with extremely severe refractive errors or fragile corneas, implantable contact lens surgery is a safe and successful option. Surgically implanted in the eye, a very thin lens typically made of collamer (a substance the body produces naturally) are placed in front of the natural lens, bending light onto the retina in order to provide a clear image.
